Crossing Lines

A bit late, about a year or so, I was finally introduced to the show Crossing Lines. One thing I absolutely love about Netflix is how it gives you access to series from all around the world and not only the US or the UK.

Crossing Lines first season begins with the introduction of one well-written character after the other, all of whom come with a strong back story. Besides a cast of actors of high caliber, Donald Sutherland stands amongst the cast, which makes the show even better. William Fichtner, Richard Flood, Marc Lavoine, Gabriella Pession and Tom Wlaschiha are together a uniquely cast of international actors and actresses. As a viewer I can’t help but love how the Italian actress Gabriella Pession actually originates from Italy and the Irish from Ireland and Lavoine from France. And so on.

The cast in combination with a manuscript filled with well-written lines, season one and two are remarkably good - getting even better for each episode. Crossing Lines does not need to revolve around Sutherland as the other characters manage perfectly on their own. However, all good things must come to an end I suppose.

By the end of season two characters die and in season three a new team is introduced. I just finished watching season three and…well, it is something of an anti-climax. New characters are introduced and all with the exception for one, the young Ellie Delfont-Bogard, the show takes a big step down on the quality latter. The character Marco Constante played by Goran Visnijic who chews gum with an open mouth and yells typically cliché bad boy lines à la Hollywood making you long for the elegant and sharp lines of Fichtner.

The series mainly consists of a more or less all American cast with its credibility at the bottom, like for example when the priest at a Danish funeral for some reason only speaks English.

Donald Sutherland is the one cast member that stands out and is for comprehensible reasons left carrying the show and the character Michel Dorn works as a father figure for the team leader Carine Strand (Elizabeth Mitchell). Season four is waiting to be recorded and I sincerely hope that Fichtner returns. And that the creator chooses to introduce an international actor as well as putting more time in the script, making it again what it was – uniquely international and European – not American.
